Family and friends.....follow along with us as we make our way across the United States by bicycle. The six of us will depart the west coast on June 14, 2010....three friends by bike and three family members by car....in hopes of reaching the east coast in 8 weeks. The following journal will be updated often with stories, pictures, and videos of our journey. We hope you enjoy.

Saturday, July 17 - Day 34 - 95 Miles - 2546.7 Total Miles

We rode almost 6 hours today in the same heat we have had all week. In fact, right now at 9:00 pm, it is still 92 degrees. I am not in the mood to spend too much time on this tonight. So, here are the facts of the day:

We started our ride early to beat the heat...it did not work.

We had a road closure that was nearly impossible to get around. Kansas has a lot of gravel roads that go nowhere. Some have dead ends. They are very dusty. We had to take our bikes through a car wash to continue to ride after the detour fiasco.

Bobby found time to nap during the detour.

We were going to tent tonight in the city park of Girard. We did get our tent today. We are not camping in this heat, therefore, we are in a motel again in Pittsburg, Kansas (it is spelled right....this Pittsburg does not have an h). The riders sat in the park in Girard until Kim found us lodging in Pitt. When she found a room....we finished by riding 15 more miles to Pitt at 3:30 in the afternoon. It could not have been hotter.

Kim's mom and dad are in Missouri. They took us out to eat at Applebees. Applebees portions are way too small. Chocolate Krispy Kreme doughnuts seem to fill in the space left by the small portion.

Kim's mom and dad took the kids with them to Branson, Missouri until Monday morning.

We did wait until the car left the parking lot before we started the party.

Planning another 90-100 mile day tomorrow. We are going to try to get started even earlier.

Good night.
