Friday, July 23 - Day 40 - 74.2 Miles - 3011 Total Miles

Today took us past the 3000 mile mark on the trip. Sometimes I think about how quickly the time has gone, then I think back to a specific campground or event and it seems so long ago. Either way, we should be around the 1000 mile to go mark. Therefore, we could be done 2 weeks from today.

We cycled in some beautiful country today. Rolling, back country roads with very little traffic were the norm for the day. The three of us rode together, not pushing very hard - just enjoying the scenery. Southern Illinois is a very popular tourist location because of the beauty, so we struggled a little to find a place to stay tonight. All of the towns are fairly small and they all have B&B's, cabins, lodges, etc., but affordable hotels/motels are few and far between. That is where Kim comes in. She came through yet again tonight with a hotel 20 miles off route in the town of Vienna, Illinois. It is no frills...it is even called the Limited Inn. We found out how limited when the first light we tried did not have a lightbulb. That must have been extra. But, we have air conditioning, WIFI, and showers, so we are set.

We had a few navigation problems today. It was probably 50/50 map error and human error, but nonetheless, we were lost a couple of times. Again, thank goodness for Kim and her GPS and map reading skills to get us back on track with little time lost.

We make it into Kentucky tomorrow after about 23 miles. Like I said yesterday, we will take a ferry across the Ohio River at Cave in Rock, Illinois. That should be fun for the kids....heck, I am looking forward to it.

Our destination tomorrow is in the town of Sebree, Kentucky. We will be staying in a cyclist hostel hosted by the First Baptist Church in town. Kim talked to the pastor today and was so impressed with him. She kept going on and on about how nice he was. He was telling her all about the area and things that she needed to see, etc. I am looking forward to staying there.

Tomorrow will probably be a no WIFI day, so we will let you know how things are going in a couple of days. Take care.

We Almost Stayed In These Homes on The Ohio...But, Found a Cheaper Alternative
