Family and friends.....follow along with us as we make our way across the United States by bicycle. The six of us will depart the west coast on June 14, 2010....three friends by bike and three family members by car....in hopes of reaching the east coast in 8 weeks. The following journal will be updated often with stories, pictures, and videos of our journey. We hope you enjoy.

Sunday, June 13 - Day 0

The whole gang is finally together. We picked up Kyle and Bobby at the Portland Airport around noon and headed out to our starting point, a campground just outside of Neskowin. It is a quiet little private campground that is just about 1/2 mile from the shore. It is a little chilly here today....mid 50's and very windy. The ocean is really rough. Not sure if that is an everyday thing or not...probably so. It is about 6:30 p.m. right now and we are all using the campground wifi before we head out to get a bite to eat. I am not sure how often we will get internet services, so we are going to use them when we can.

Everyone is very excited to get this under way tomorrow. It looks like it will be pretty cool in the morning, but should get a little better as we move away from the coast. We plan on dipping our tires in the Pacific fairly early tomorrow morning, and then get on our way. Not a whole lot else to say today. Here are our relevant pictures for the day:

Saturday, June 12 - Day Negative 1

We were not in a big hurry this morning to leave Missoula because the drive was a little shorter than the other days and we had a few things to buy. By the time we got on the highway, it was about 11:00. The country that we drove through was beautiful. The Columbia River Valley, the snow capped mountains miles in the distance, the waterfalls in Oregon, were all unlike the terrain we witness daily in Miami County, Ohio.

Mt. Hood Behind Our Hotel In Portland

We got to our hotel on the grounds of the Portland Airport by 6:45. Tomorrow we will pick up Kyle and Bobby around noon and head to Neskowin for a night of camping. The weather for Monday's first day of riding in Neskowin calls for a high of 53 and mostly cloudy. Until we get a way from the coast, that looks like the norm for weather.

The comedy for the day occured as Anna and I walked onto the grounds of a rest stop in Washington. Anna, when she realized we were in Washington, proclaimed "ah....I didn't take any pictures in Oklahoma!" The second half of the day's ride we studied the Atlas that we have packed.

Also, I have taken a little heat from my wife on the deer/turkey comments from yesterday. I should note that the deer in question was 150 feet off of the road, 3/4 covered in tall grass, and apparently, bent over. Now that we have cleared that up, it is easy to understand the confusion.

With only one day of rest left, I am glad that the riding is about to begin. I am looking forward to retracing some of the same types of terrain we have covered on our trip out to the coast....at a much slower pace.
